Not unlike ages preceding ours, this world is filled to the full with skepticism. A great measure of this is the direct result of misinformation, misrepresentation, and misunderstanding. Is there anything of which you and I may be certain?
When it comes to spiritual matters, the religious arena, it, too, is flooded with similar sentiments of distrust. Why? Misinformation, misrepresentation, and misunderstanding.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a spiritual message upon which you could depend, a message that was so certain, so sure, so steadfast that you never had to fear for a millisecond that it might be swept away in an instant as a huge cobweb? Try the Holy Scriptures, the Bible.
While the world hastily builds their golden houses upon quicksand, there is a bedrock foundation that has withstood the test of time. Our Heavenly Father urges you and me to set ourselves apart, to exercise spiritual wisdom in building upon the solid rock (cf. Matthew 7:24-27).
In fulfilment of God’s charge to his people during the first century A.D., men, women and young people living in the small town of Colossae, in Asia Minor, had heard “the word of the truth of the gospel” (Colossians 1:5) when it was declared by Epaphras, “a faithful minister of Christ” (1:7). God working through this man, they “knew the grace of God in truth” (1:6). The same result may follow today with God working through us.
Even today while there are unnumbered messengers throughout the world, all of them who submit themselves (yield their own will) under the authority of God speak with one voice. All who truly speak the message of God pertaining to the salvation of men’s souls speak with clarity the identical message spoken by Jesus, his chosen apostles and the inspired penmen of the biblical text. A man may speak “holy talk,” seem to be learned and have a great pedigree, but when he speaks a message that conflicts with Jesus, the pre-eminent Son of God, who has been endowed with all power from on high, he is a false teacher. He may appear sheepish, but he is a ravening wolf (Matthew 7:15).
In view of threatening false teachers (misinformation, misrepresentation, misunderstanding), who might otherwise seize and carry them away as spoils of war (2:6-8), Paul prayed fervently on behalf of his brethren: “That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ…” (Colossians 2:2).
In their acknowledgement of the mystery of God, they had chosen to receive and embrace God’s message of sanctifying truth that is understandable, exact, perfect and complete in every detail. Don’t allow yourself and those you care about most to be misled and deceived by messengers of darkness. God’s truth is still true. It is universal. It is eternal (cf. 1 Peter 1:14-25). You and I will be judged by it in the last day (John 12:48-49).
