A Cake Not Turned

In Old Testament times, dough was sometimes rolled flat to cook. Sometimes it was rolled into an oval shape and baked. The oven was sometimes simply a small pit dug into the ground with a flat surface over it. The dough would be put on the surface and then turned when it was partially done. This turning would allow the bread to cook evenly on both sides. This would also allow it to cook properly all the way through. Today, we have ovens that cook evenly all the way around the dough and it is not necessary to always turn the bread over.

God said the Israelites were like a cake not turned in Hosea 7:8. This meant that the cake had been allowed to sit for too long on one side. It was burned on one side and undone on the other side. This made it completely useless. It could not be eaten at all. It needed to be thrown out as garbage.

God said the Israelites were useless to him. They needed to be thrown out with the garbage. Their sacrifices and prayers to him were not acceptable. Normally prayers and sacrifices go up to him as a sweet smell. But because of their wickedness, the Israelite’s sacrifices smelled terrible to him. They smelled just like a burning cake.

Make sure you are a properly cooked cake in God’s eyes. Learn all you can about obeying him. Keep reading your Bible. And if any of this is hard  to understand, ask an adult to help you.Image
