Fat and Flourishing

Have you ever known an old person who was not a nice person? Perhaps this person was mean. Perhaps this person was always finding something to complain about. Perhaps this person did not like to talk to people. Perhaps this person said he did not like anyone else. Perhaps this person talked with bad language.

No one wants to be around someone like that. That kind of person does not influence anyone else for good.

In Psalm 92:14, we read, “They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.” This is in reference to the righteous person. Any old person who says he is a righteous person will not be like the individual described in our first paragraph.

The words “fat and flourishing” basically mean “full of sap and green.” This gives the picture of a healthy tree that invites people to sit under it for shade or pick the fruit that is on it. The righteous individual should be of such character that people will want to be around him.

People should find that they are given wise words, that they are given kind and loving words, that they are given encouragement, that they are given comfort by the old righteous person. Even in old age, there is spiritual fruit that can be produced. By their example, young people should be encouraged to do what is right.

Even though the old person may have many and various physical ailments, he can be very healthy and fruitful spiritually.

Study your Bible. Put it to work in your life. Make sure that you properly prepare yourself to be fat and flourishing in your old age. And if any of this is hard to understand, ask an adult to help you.Image
