In ancient Bible times people got their water from rivers, lakes, and wells. Many places in Palestine had long periods when it would not rain. Water would become scarce. Even many wells would become dry in very severe times of drought.
It was a custom in many places to have a special well. This well would be a very deep well. It was only to be used in times of very bad water shortages. This well would have a cap on it. The top of the well would be mortared up so that no one could draw water out of it. This cap of mortar would have to be broken off for anyone to get water. The water from this well would be very precious indeed to the people. It would be the only water available and its use would be very much needed. Lives would be saved by drinking it.
In Zechariah 13:1, we read, “In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.” This prophecy is about Jesus. He would be the fountain opened up for all mankind. A fountain is another name for well. Man needed the very precious water from the fountain of Life. Without that water, man would have no hope of living with God in Heaven. God allowed that well to be opened at just the right time in history.
Keep reading your Bible. Only through studying it can you learn what you need to know to obey God. Only the Bible tells you how to obtain the water from the opened well, Christ.
