The Bridge Is Out!

“Warning, Warning, the Bridge Is Out!” That reminds me that decades ago the robot in the old television show Lost in Space (aired from 1965 to 1968) similarly and frequently uttered a warning. He would say, “Danger, Will Robinson.” Yep! Every time the robot said, “Danger, Will Robinson,” a new danger was about to reveal itself. Fortunately, Will Robinson was alerted, and he successfully circumvented each dangerous circumstance.

In the real world, dangers threaten us within our physical and earthly environment. Even more importantly, dangers threaten us in the spiritual realm, too (1 Peter 5:8). Prepared before hand by the Word of God, we can persevere despite confrontation with spiritual dangers (1 Peter 5:9; Ephesians 6:13-17).

Imagine that you are standing alongside a road, and you are aware that the bridge is out just a little east of you. Traffic coming from the west doesn’t seem to know of the danger as it rushes toward the perilous void in the roadway. Would you frantically attempt to wave down the rushing vehicle, or would you hesitate, knowing that the driver and passengers might react angrily if you impede their travel? What ought you to do? After all, the occupants of the car might hurt your feelings. What would you do?

Most of the world is traveling at breakneck speed toward an abyss far more tragic and eternally more hurtful than an automobile crash into a canyon—as bad as that would be. Christians stand on the side of life’s road as they observe the masses traveling the broad way to destruction (Matthew 7:13-14). In a sense, “The Bridge Is Out!” Many undiscerning precious souls hasten on the highway to hell! Scripture variously describes the horror of hell: “furnace of fire” (Matthew 13:50), “everlasting destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:9), “condemnation of hell” (Matthew 23:33), “fire that shall never be quenched” (Mark 9:43), “outer darkness” (Matthew 8:12), “everlasting punishment” (Matthew 25:46), “chains of darkness” (2 Peter 2:4), “suffering the vengeance of eternal fire” (Jude 7), “bottomless pit” (Revelation 9:1-2), “tormented with fire and brimstone” (Revelation 14:10) and “lake of fire and brimstone” (Revelation 20:10).

So many priceless souls are hurtling themselves toward an eternity for which they are not prepared. They are lost, not following God’s roadmap—the Bible. Are you willing to interject yourself into their lives, uninvited, to gravely warn them of their impending and permanent spiritual devastation? What ought you to do? After all, they might hurt your feelings. What would you do?

In the storyline of Lost in Space, Will Robinson was alerted to impending danger and successfully circumvented it every time. Are you prepared to (1) circumvent spiritual dangers you may face and (2) interject yourself into the lives of others with whom you come in contact, who it appears are unprepared to meet God in Judgment (Amos 4:12), even if they react badly toward you? In the spiritual world, “Warning, Warning, the Bridge Is Out!” Can you muster enough courage to save some soul today? In principle, Ezekiel 3:18 is applicable to the children of God relative to lost souls. “When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand” (Ezekiel 3:18).
