Flee as a Bird

Small birds are easily scared. Birds will quickly fly away in response to any sudden movement or sound. Many times, they look for a tree or bush in which to hide. There were many rocky crevices and caves in the mountains of Palestine. The birds would fly to these.

David compared himself and other followers of God to these birds. Psalm 11:1 reads, “In the Lord I put my trust; how say you to my soul, ‘Flee as a bird to your mountain’?” David said he was not like the little birds. He had no reason to fly away from his spiritual enemies. His faith was in God.

In verse four, David said he had nowhere to flee if the foundations were destroyed. He was saying that if he did not have faith that God is in Heaven and able to defeat his enemies, then there was nowhere to run that would be safe.
