In Exodus Chapter Sixteen, we read about the bread from heaven—manna. God gave manna to the Israelites for their food while they were in the wilderness. It is said that the manna tasted like fresh oil in Numbers 11:8. In Exodus 16:31, it is said to taste like honey wafers. It could be boiled, baked or ground. Even though it could be boiled, it melted in the sun. It spoiled after one day but kept for 2 days on Friday and Saturday (the people were not allowed to gather on the seventh day and had to gather 2 days worth on Friday).
God gave enough for each person to have an omer’s worth. An omer is close to 3 quarts. According to one estimate, this would come to 9 million pounds of manna per day. That would mean 1 million tons of manna per year! That is a very big number, and you may have to get an adult to explain just how much that is.
Some people have tried to say that God did not give manna from heaven. They try to explain that manna was simply something that a plant in the desert produces. This is silly. There is nowhere in the world where that amount of food is grown in the desert. Even if there were a plant that gave such amounts, it would not grow year round every day (except none was given on Saturday. So, the plant would have had to produce on every day except Saturday.) Plus, this lasted for forty years!
Only God could have given the manna. Only God is powerful enough to have done such a thing. There is no natural explanation. This was a supernatural supply of manna.
I am glad we have a God who loves us. He loved the Israelites enough to give them food for forty years while they were in the desert.
