Weaving Spider Webs

In Isaiah 59:5-6, we read, “They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper. Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.”

The verses before these talk about how wicked the people were. They were involved in all kinds of evil things. God pictures these evil things as spider webs. The people are pictured as spinning these webs. You can see through spider webs. Spider webs do not really cover anything. The webbing is sticky and insects are caught in it. But the webbing does not keep you from seeing what is on the other side.

Spiritually the spider webbing is very poor clothing. God says that the righteous are clothed in righteousness. Sometimes the righteous garments are depicted as white clothing that covers the individual. The wicked are depicted in the Bible as being spiritually naked. The spider webbing catches and traps them in their own wickedness. But the webbing does not cover up their spiritual nakedness.

Do not weave spider webs. Keep yourself properly clothed. Study your Bible. Learn how to obey God. And if any of this is hard to understand, ask an adult to help you.Image
