In the United States these days, we hear a great deal about whether it matters what kind of personal life a politician leads. Some people have said that character does not really matter as long as the politician makes the right decisions regarding the law and policies. Some have said that a man’s character in private life is separated from his ability to make public decisions. Some have said that a politician should keep his personal religious beliefs to himself and not allow them to alter his political decisions.
In Deuteronomy 17:18-20, we read regarding the kings of Israel that when they “sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites: and it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them: that his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.”
God says that a ruler should keep the Word of God with him at all times. He should read it and study it. He should apply it to his life. The Word of God will keep him on the right path in all aspects of his life. He must follow God’s law not only in private life but public life as well. He must fear God and rule his people with proper character.
We need more politicians who will be courageous and keep the Word of God close to their hearts. Instead of making decisions strictly on what will get them re-elected, we need politicians who will listen to God and what he desires in men’s lives. We need leaders who are not ashamed to say they want to be on God’s side in all things.
Study your Bible. Learn all you can about God’s Word. Grow up and elect individuals who will rule according to God’s Law. Or, if you choose, try to become to a statesman so that you can rule according to God’s Law and help our country be the kind of nation it should be. If you live in another country, perhaps you can influence people in your land to understand that God’s laws will help a ruler be a good ruler.
